Race Info:
The course is a single, scenic lap of the quieter western parts of the Island. It heads out from Cowes through Gurnard, Porchfield and Shalfleet to Yarmouth, then comes back via Thorley, Chessell, Ningwood and Northwood. We won’t pretend it’s flat. It rolls all the way round and many runners find the second half tougher than they expected. The reward is quiet country lanes, beautiful Island scenery and a finish you’ll really have earned.
History:
The Isle of Wight Marathon is where British marathon history was made. It was first run in 1957 and has been held every year since, making it the longest, continuously run marathon in the UK. In 1964, when women weren’t allowed to race marathons, Ryde Harriers let a young Scottish runner called Dale Greig line up anyway. She finished in 3 hours 27 minutes, the first woman in
the world to run a marathon in under three and a half hours. We’ve been welcoming everyone to the start line ever since.
